A Discussion on the Properties of Physically Unclonable Functions

چکیده
The increasing interest in physically unclonable functions or PUFs and in PUF-based security applications desires a concrete and as formal as possible description of what a PUF is and which properties can be naturally expected. However, the wide and growing variety of different PUF and PUF-like proposals makes such a formalization attempt a nontrivial task. In this work we provide a starting point by developing a concrete, though still informal, description of the minimal requirements a construction needs to meet in order to be called a PUF. Additionally, this study gives an insight into attainable and/or desirable PUF properties and reveals some interesting research directions for future investigation.

متن کاملAnti-Counterfeiting technique based Reflective-Physically Unclonable Functions
Reflective Physically Unclonable Functions (r-PUFs) are a manifestation of a security principle where two dimensional projections of randomly distributed reflective microstructures in a three dimensional plane form the basis of an anticounterfeiting technique. In this paper we present an overview of the system design with focus on optical aspects of the technique along with summary results.
متن کاملMemory Leakage-Resilient Encryption Based on Physically Unclonable Functions
Physical attacks on cryptographic implementations and devices have become crucial. In this context a recent line of research on a new class of side-channel attacks, called memory attacks, has received increasingly more attention. These attacks allow an adversary to measure a significant fraction of secret key bits directly from memory, independent of any computational side-channels. Physically ...
متن کاملOn the Key Generation Rate of Physically Unclonable Functions
THIS PAPER IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE STUDENT PAPER AWARD. In this paper, an algebraic binning based coding scheme and its associated achievable rate for key generation using physically unclonable functions (PUFs) is determined. This achievable rate is shown to be optimal under the generated-secret (GS) model for PUFs. Furthermore, a polar code based polynomial-time encoding and decoding scheme that a...
متن کاملAsynchronous Physical Unclonable Functions - AsyncPUF
Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) exploit the physical characteristics of silicon and provide an alternative to storing digital encryption keys in non-volatile memory. A PUF maps a unique set of digital inputs to a corresponding set of digital outputs. In this paper, the use of asynchronous logic and design techniques to implement PUFs is advocated for Asynchronous Physically Unclonable Fu...
